Transfer & Payment Guide
Everything you need to understand about Valley First transfer types, limits, processing times, and how to choose the right method for every situation.
Moving Money in a Connected Financial World
Money in a modern checking account rarely stays in one place. It flows to a savings account for an emergency fund, outward to a mortgage servicer each month, across town to a child's account at a different institution, or across the country to close on a home purchase. Valley First Credit Union's electronic transfer capabilities give members control over every one of these movements — whether the transfer happens between two Valley First accounts in the same household or between a Valley First checking account and an account at an entirely different financial institution on the other side of the country.
The credit union supports three distinct transfer methods, each optimized for different use cases. Internal transfers move funds instantly between any two Valley First accounts you own. ACH external transfers connect your Valley First account to accounts at other financial institutions for routine, scheduled money movement. Wire transfers provide same-day settlement for large, time-sensitive transactions where speed and finality are paramount. Understanding which method fits which situation helps members avoid unnecessary delays and fees while ensuring funds arrive exactly when needed.
Internal Transfers — Instant Money Movement
Internal transfers represent the simplest and fastest form of electronic money movement at Valley First Credit Union. Any member with more than one account — a checking account and a savings account, for example, or a personal checking account and a joint account with a spouse — can transfer funds between those accounts in real time through online banking or the mobile app. The transfer posts immediately to both accounts: the sending account's available balance decreases and the receiving account's available balance increases in the same moment. There is no processing delay, no cutoff time, and no dollar limit. Members can make internal transfers twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays.
The practical applications of instant internal transfers extend well beyond simply moving money between checking and savings. A parent can transfer a weekly allowance to a child's youth savings account from anywhere. Members can fund a new share certificate by transferring from checking without visiting a branch. Couples with joint accounts can rebalance household finances in real time. Business members can sweep excess operating account balances into interest-bearing accounts at the end of each business day. Because these transfers never leave the Valley First system, they complete with none of the settlement delays or intermediary clearing steps that characterize external transfers.
ACH External Transfers — Standard Inter-Institution Movement
ACH transfers connect your Valley First account to accounts you hold at other banks and credit unions through the national Automated Clearing House network, the same infrastructure that processes direct deposits, electronic bill payments, and most recurring electronic debits. Setting up an ACH link requires a one-time verification process: you provide the routing number and account number of the external account, Valley First sends two small test deposits to that account within one to two business days, and you confirm the deposit amounts within online banking to validate that you control the external account. Once the link is verified, you can push funds from Valley First to the external account or pull funds from the external account into Valley First, all through the online banking transfer interface.
ACH transfers occupy the middle ground in the speed spectrum. They are not instant like internal transfers, but they are significantly faster than mailing a check and more predictable than waiting for an external debit to clear. Standard ACH transfers submitted before 2:00 PM Pacific Time on a business day typically complete within one to two business days. Weekend and holiday submissions begin processing on the next business day. Personal accounts carry a daily ACH limit of $5,000 and a monthly limit of $25,000. Business accounts may qualify for higher ACH limits based on account type and transaction history.
ACH transfers are free for personal checking account members and serve as the recommended method for routine external money movement — transferring a portion of each paycheck to a high-yield savings account at another institution, sending a monthly contribution to an investment account, or moving funds to cover a bill that cannot be paid through the Valley First bill pay system. The predictability and zero cost of ACH transfers make them the default choice for scheduled, recurring external transfers. Wire Transfers — Speed When It Counts
Wire transfers occupy the premium tier of electronic money movement: they are faster and handle larger amounts than ACH transfers, but they carry fees and require more detailed information to initiate. A domestic wire transfer submitted before the 2:00 PM Pacific Time cutoff on a business day typically settles at the receiving institution within hours on the same day. The funds are irrevocable upon settlement, which is why wire transfers are the standard method for real estate closings, vehicle purchases from out-of-state sellers, and other large transactions where both parties need certainty that the money has definitively changed hands.
To send a domestic wire transfer from Valley First, you need the receiving institution's routing number, the recipient's full account number, the recipient's name exactly as it appears on the account, and the dollar amount. Wire requests can be initiated through online banking for amounts up to standard limits, or in person at any Valley First branch for larger amounts or more complex instructions. Incoming wire transfers — money being sent to your Valley First account from another institution — are free and have no dollar limit. You provide the sender with Valley First's routing number (325181024) and your full account number, and the funds appear in your account the same business day they are sent. International Wire Transfers
International wire transfers enable members to send funds to bank accounts in other countries through the SWIFT network. These transfers require the receiving institution's SWIFT code or IBAN in addition to the standard account and routing information. International wires take longer than domestic wires — typically two to five business days — because they must pass through intermediary correspondent banks in addition to clearing at the destination institution. The fee for an outgoing international wire is $35 from Valley First. Exchange rate conversion occurs at the prevailing rate on the processing date, and some receiving institutions may assess additional fees on their end. Members planning international wires should contact Valley First member support at (509) 555-0185 to confirm the required documentation and processing timeline before initiating the transfer.
Scheduling Recurring Transfers
Both internal and ACH external transfers support recurring scheduling through Valley First online banking. A member who wants to automatically move two hundred dollars from checking to savings every payday can configure a recurring internal transfer with the desired frequency, amount, and start date. The transfer executes on schedule without further action until the member modifies or cancels the series. Recurring ACH transfers work the same way for external accounts, making them ideal for regular contributions to investment accounts, automatic rent payments to a landlord's bank, or scheduled transfers to family members at other institutions. Each scheduled transfer triggers an email notification confirming the transaction, so the member always has a record of what moved and when.
